JT Winik has painted full time since 1996 and has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions, primarily in Toronto, Canada and Amsterdam, The Netherlands.  Her work has been featured on book covers, and in books and national magazines published in Canada, Turkey, Holland and England. Although based in Kingston, Ontario, winters have generally found her in Spain where, in 1996, she first travelled to Fuente Studios to work alongside other artists for two months.  Located in a small mountain village northeast of Malaga, she fell in love with the countryside, the mountain walks and, last but not least, the people.  Throughout the years she has continued to spend winter periods painting there.  She has often divided that time with periods in Amsterdam, working in the guest studio of the Retort Artist’s Foundation: “You could feel it  as you parked your bicycle in the foyer each morning.  With 34 studios, and artists encompassing a vast range of media, from digital to painting, ceramics and sculpture … the place was abuzz - not with noise, for everyone was working - but with a creative energy that was almost palpable.”  Experiences like this led her also to work one winter in Mexico where she met artists, writers, poets and musicians and was honored to participate in some of their events.  She is currently represented in Toronto, Montreal and Amsterdam.

Frequently incorporating the female form, my themes often examine dualities:  power and fragility, wisdom and foolishness, sin and innocence, passion and passivity, etc.  Although earlier works more often placed my figures in defined contexts within a room, for instance, or a composition in which several subjects interact intricately within a space more recent works focus on one or two figures and often, on just a single face, disembodied from context thus so, to examine more closely the fine line that runs between the myriad feelings any individual encompasses in a given moment.  My work is largely about states of introspection, with the relationships one experiences with ones self or with others.
